After visiting Chalet Linden (SLURL), it was almost inevitable that I would explore the surrounding area. The Wengen sim is part of the Snowlands Subcontinent of Sansara. There’s quite a lot to see and do in the Snowlands! For example, there’s a functional railway and pod network with scripted tours. I adore trains and tours, so Agnes Periapse and I tried both.

When I recently returned to Second Life, I spent a lot of time on mostly-empty mainland sims. I’m sure you’re familiar with this type of sim. For example, Blush (SLURL) still seems popular; I see a lot of people on the bottom of the ocean floor there. I just needed someplace quiet to get my bearings again—and to try on demos! I also needed a new “home location.”

Within a few months of joining Second Life in 2007, I had rented my first parcel. I rented or owned land until 2010, right around the time that I took a break from SL. I logged in every few years and eventually set my home location at a friend’s shop. After coming back, I did check on that location. I got caught in an unfortunate loop: ejected, sent home, ejected, sent home, ad nauseam. So much has changed in SL and it’s not surprising that the parcel had been sold!

I did some research and discovered that you can only set your home location on land you own, land owned by groups that allow you to set your home location, and Infohubs. After a little more digging, I found a list of official Infohubs on the Second Life Wiki. I visited most of them and have currently settled on Chalet Linden (SLURL). At least it’s seasonally appropriate!

While hopping around the grid in search of a new “home,” I was also busy updating my wardrobe. COCO (SLURL) has a nice range of casual clothing, including this comfy oversized sweater and jeans. I found the boots at ROC (SLURL) and have been wearing them a lot! I found both stores to be quite affordable, as well! And, speaking of deals, the hair pictured was a group gift from Truth (SLURL). There’s a fee to join the Truth group, but I think it’s worth it!

Second Life has changed a lot in eight years, but I’m back and catching up as fast as I can! One of the first things I had to research was mesh bodies and heads. I realized quickly that mesh clothing is largely intended to be worn with mesh bodies and I do love to shop for new clothes! As much as I loved my old shape and skin, it was time to update. The current motto seems to be “demo, demo, demo,” so that’s just what I did. I tried on so many mesh bodies, bento heads, and skin appliers. I won’t share my progress, as you can probably imagine what a mess that was!

In the end, I went with the Maitreya Lara body and the Catwa Koura head. I love freckles and DeeTaleZ does them so nicely, so I bought their appliers for the Lara body and the Hailey applier for the Catwa head. Truth was one of my favorite hair brands eight years ago, so I was thrilled to see that they’re still around! I grabbed the current group gifts and a few other styles.

I just love the facial expressions on the Catwa heads. They’re so cute! The clear green eyes are from Avi-Glam. The makeup and bodysuit are both from alaksametro, another old favorite! EarthStones was another blast-from-the-past and I ended up there in search of new glasses. I think that they really complete my new look!

If you have any suggestions for shopping or grid exploration, please feel free to leave a comment or message me in-world!

The tantalizing idea of tattoo layers was one of the main reasons I finally made the switch to SL Viewer 2.0. I’m not exactly a makeup fanatic in SL. I prefer natural looks, with minimal makeup. What I am fanatic about, though, is freckles. I have often wished for more freckle options from skin creators. The idea that I could add freckles to any skin at all definitely had me excited!

I have spent the majority of my increasingly rare time in SL recently trying to relearn navigation in Viewer 2.0. I have also been test driving a skin from Mynerva (SLURL) that I bought in September. This skin was made not only with the tattoo layer options in mind, but also convienently fuels my “perfect freckle” desire.

Makeup Anatomy

Pictured above, in the first row, is a deconstructed view of the Mynerva “Plain Jane” skin, with added makeup and lashes shown in the second row.

I began with the Plain Jane skin from Mynerva. This skin comes with multiple options, including the “no brows” version with eyeliner seen here. After choosing the base skin in Butterscotch, I added eyebrows on a tattoo layer. The eyebrows are also from Mynerva – Style 2 in Red Light. Another tattoo layer was added, this time the Mynerva “Hundreds and Thousands” freckles. Again, everything from Mynerva comes with a lot of choices. I believe the light tone would have been the choice for my skin tone, but I wanted darker freckles and chose the mid tone version instead.

I am still exploring my options in terms of makeup layers at the moment, but, for this look, I used the free “Fall 2008” makeup from alaskametro (SLURL). This makeup includes eyeliner, eyeshadow, and light lipstick on one layer. At this point, I could have also added a lash layer, but I still prefer prim lashes – the Natural lashes from Laqroki (SLURL) are my favorite.

I have also been looking for tattoo layer makeup on the SL Marketplace this weekend, and these are some of my finds:

So far, I have chosen to demo brands that I am familiar with, but I am always open to suggestions!

Post Processing:
I did a bit of editing to smooth out the jacket prims, they didn’t match up quite this well in-world. I also thickened my lower legs, to fill out the boots better, which I could have easily done in-world by editing the pants layer.
